Everyone’s “opinion” makes me wonder sometimes if anyone actually “knows”. But even so, being a process-out-loud type and all, I ask for the opinion of and like to talk through ideas and decisions with just about anyone who’ll listen. Some people are always incredibly supportive and encouraging. Some people are negative and discouraging. Some people just wish I’d shut up. And some people care enough to build me up.
But in the end, we each have to make the best decision for ourselves and the people we love regardless of what anyone else “thinks”. The decisions in my life that I have been given the most grief about have actually turned out to be some of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The terrible ideas, the “wrong” choices, the “career suicides”, the bold decisions that went against the conventional norm have made me feel alive; many of them have changed my life. Had I chosen the path of least resistance or followed the popular opinion, life wouldn’t be near as much fun as it is now. And nothing is more fun than proving a naysayer wrong!
Emerson said “The world makes way for the man who knows where he is going”. Be that man…or woman. There is always value in the perspective of others and I would encourage you to seek it out, but the choice to be or not to be, the decision to do or not to do, is yours. Follow your heart, have courage, and be bold!
“Mmm, terrible ideas… Don’t you just love those?” – Katherine in Under the Tuscan Sun
